The manufacture of Japanese cars Nissan announced that they finally stopped the production of vehicles under the Datsun brand in India. The manufacturer has planned this from a very long time. From 2019, exactly. The manufacturer has a plan to stop the Datsun globally after their operations in Russia and Indonesia are stopped. With this decision, the datsun trip was almost 9 years ended in India. Even it’s not just India, the production of the Datsun model is called globally.
Datsun in India only has three models in their portfolio. Datsun goes, go plus and red-go. The manufacturer has stopped the production of go and GO Plus and now the manufacturer has confirmed that the production of Red-Go Hatchback has also been stopped. In an official statement, the manufacturer said, “As part of the Nissan global transformation strategy, the company focuses on core models and segments that bring the greatest benefits to customers, dealer partners, and business. Datsun Redigo production has stopped at the Chennai plant.”
From January 2021 to December 2021, Datsun only managed to sell 4,296 units in India. Although, Nissan stopped Datsun, the manufacture would continue to offer its support to existing Datsun customers. Customers will not face problems with services, spare parts and warranty services. Nissan will continue to provide services to customers through their national dealer network.
Nissan launched the Datsun brand in 2013. It was revived with the aim of serving developing country markets such as India with cheap products. India is one of the first countries to actually get Datsun Hatchback. It was launched in India when Nissan himself did not have fun. The initial plan of Nissan is to position Datsun as a brand that offers entry-level products, Nissan on it and Nissan infiniti at the top which will offer luxury models to customers.
One of the biggest talk points for Datsun went when officially launched in 2014 was a price. Diplites from RS 3.12 Lakh, a former showroom up to 3.69 lakh, a former showroom. It was widely used by fleet operators for some time but sales for Datsun went never to be a successful product. In 2015, Datsun launched a long version of Go and called it Datsun GO Plus. It is marketed as a compact MPV. Just like Go, Go Plus is also valued very competitive but because of the lack of features that means sales have never taken off.
Datsun then launched the Redi-Go which was a hatchback with a high boy’s design to compete with people like Maruti Celerio, Renault Kwid and Tata Tiago. They even introduced a facelift for Go and GO Plus and even introduced CVT Gearbox in 2019. One of the main reasons that Datsun has never been popular in the market is because the time in which he was introduced on the market. It was launched when Nissan was not in a position to offer sufficient support for the brand. Another reason is the cost of cutting costs. It was very clear in the Datsun model and gave cheap nuances for cars. This together with poor performance in the global NCAP test means the end for Datsun.
